If you’re hoping that the weather is due to change soon, don’t hold your breath!

Forecasters have warned that the UK will be hit by a cold snap starting this week and due to last for a month.

Many parts will endure night time frost, hail and oh more heavy rain.

The north will be the hardest hit with Cumbria temperatures reaching -6 and the possibility of snow.

Showers are due to hit the country by Thursday this week and will continue into June.

Looks like last weekend’s weather was a short fleeting respite.

The north south divide and how south pay double for same product

The high street has been found to charge people living in the South of England more than those living in the north for the same product.

It includes everything from a cup of coffee to a cinema ticket to food.

Greggs, for example, charge customers in the north 66p for a large sausage roll but charge those in the south 85p.

A similar rate increase of almost 30% also exists within chains such as McDonald’s, Domino’s, Cineworld and Odeon cinemas, David Lloyd gyms and Wetherspoons.

These firms allege that their prices differ due to the lower cost of living in the north. This will no doubt add to the Chancellor, George Osborne’s plan to introduce regional wages in the public sector. The idea is that everyone is paid lower where the cost of living is lower.

Official figures make clear than people earn considerably more in the south but the housing costs are also considerably more expensive.

Plans to rename Big Ben in honour of Queen get backing from leaders

Senior MPs from all three main parties have backed the move to rename Big Ben in honour of th Queen’s six decades on the throne.

Ministers and shadow ministers are being encouraged to sign a proposal that will change the landmark’s official name from The Clock Tower to the Elizabeth Tower.

If half of the MPs join then it has been agreed that the famous bell will be renamed.

Nicknamed Big Ben, the 316ft tower is one of London’s most iconic landmarks and known across the globe. Colloquially it will continue to be called Big Ben however MPs say that it should carry the Queen’s name as well.

The Prime Minister has described renaming the tower as a “really great idea” that would be a “fitting tribute” to the Queen.

The currently named Clock Tower was completed in 1858 and holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world.

Pizza Hut unveils new pizza dog

It looks and sounds like an American pizza but Pizza Hut’s newest addition to their menu is being unveiled to the UK public.

The new Pizza Dog is pizza-meets-hotdog and sees your typical hotdog (sans bun) injected into the stuffed crust of your pizza.

The website brands it’s new invention as a “succulent hot dog sausage bursting from our famous stuffed crust.”

Rather bizarrely and they may well be missing a trick, the company claims they have no plans to take the new Pizza Dog across to US shores.

Pizza Hut were successful with their original idea of stuffed crusts and have since added many variants including cheese and garlic bread stuffed crusts however it’s not a totally new invention as the Pizza Dog has been on the market in Thailand and Japan since 2007.  Only time will tell if the Dizza Dog will be a hit over here though it’s not exactly the greatest idea to help with our ever increasingly overweight and unhealthy nation is it?

Will you be trying the Pizza Dog?

No bluetooth in your car? How one man resorts to phone calls in his car

Category: Mevio UK Today, Tech · 0

Many cars now have inbuilt bluetooth or kits that can be purchased and installed in your car but one man in Hull seems to have found a cheaper alternative.

Behold, the 2p elastic band!

The idea is simple, strap a giant elastic band to your head with your phone slipped under it.  If stopped by the police though, he could have found himself with three penalty points on his licence.

Peter Loft, 62, took the picture in the village of Patrington, near Hull.  He said, “This bloke drove past me and started to pull into a car park and I caught sight of this thing on his head out of the corner of my eye. My first thought was, “What the hell is that?”.  But when I looked a bit closer I realised that it was a phone on the side of his head and there was an elastic band keeping it there.  He was just finishing up a conversation. I’d never seen anything like that before. It looked pretty odd.”

It is illegal to drive while using a hand-held mobile phone and it’s not as if a hands free kit is priced out of many a person’s price range.  You can buy hands-free kits using an earpiece which cost as little as £7.

Ellen Booth, from road safety group Brake, says she suspects the police would take this seriously as it is not a practical or safe alternative, “I would suggest that it’s even more dangerous than simply holding a phone in your hand because this is a very complicated manoeuvre.”  Meanwhile a spokesman for the Department for Transport said it would be for a court to decide if the motorist was driving illegally in this case.

Hallelujah spring is here!

We’ve had freezing weather and snow and ghastly winds but the UK is in for a milder time now as spring is well and truly here!

Temperatures are due to hit 18C in some areas this weekend and the mild weather is set to stay for a couple of weeks.

Met forecaster Chris Bulmer said, “certainly through the next couple of weeks it will be fair and settles, and that’s not going to change. It will be rather closer with some brighter days and it will feel mild.”

Helen Chivers, a Met Office forecaster said on Thursday night that there was no, “indication for any colder or wintry weather returning. From a temperature and dry weather point of view, the next month could be described as fine spring weather, feeling warm when the sun is out. Settled weather is expected for pretty much all parts as high pressure looks as though it will remain close to the UK for some time. People think of showers when they think of spring – but it doesn’t look like we’ll see many of them in the next few weeks, with much of the month dry.”

At the moment spring’s normal rain showers are giving us a reprieve with some showers in the west but with the weather remaining predominantly dry.

We have had snow before in April but forecasters said there were no signs of this recurring this year while last April was unseasonably warm with summer arriving early.
