Weight Watchers make move to the high street

Category: Health · 0

The slimming chain Weight Watchers is making its move onto the UK high street.

For decades, devotees have been meeting in public places such as community centres and town halls each week to chart their weight loss and gather support from other devotees using the company’s points system.

Their new high street centres will pull in more dieters who need to fit their regime into their busy day. Dieting services as well as meals will be available to cater to their needs. Group sessions and one on one sessions will also be available.

The first centre has just opened in Reading. Spokesman Chris Stirk said, “The centre will offer a more personalised and flexible service for busy people like working mums and office workers who can pop in when they have time. With many of us working longer hours and demanding a more personalised, flexible service, we continue to adapt and enhance our products and services to meet the needs of the community.”

Stand alone stores for Weight Watchers already exist in the US, Australia and China with plans in the UK set to roll out sites in London, Birmingham and Leeds.

She’s the only girl on the panel and has seen her fame soar even more for her down to earth attitude and her great personality but The Voice star Jessie J is being closely monitored over fears for her health.

The pop star suffered a stroke when she was 18 and overworking herself; being in a band and holding down four jobs.

Due to the amount of pressure she is under on the show and the sheer amount of work it entails, she is being closely monitored to make sure her health doesn’t suffer.

A source said, “She works incredibly hard not only on The Voice but also promoting her album around the world. Add that to the gruelling touring, personal appearances and recording and it would be a lot for anyone to take.”

Jessie said of her stroke last year, “I had a stroke when I was 18. I was in a girl band at the time and had, like, 4 jobs. I was really tired and my body shut down.”

Jessie is currently in the US but returns to UK shores at the end of the month with the live shows of The Voice.

Pizza Hut unveils new pizza dog

It looks and sounds like an American pizza but Pizza Hut’s newest addition to their menu is being unveiled to the UK public.

The new Pizza Dog is pizza-meets-hotdog and sees your typical hotdog (sans bun) injected into the stuffed crust of your pizza.

The website brands it’s new invention as a “succulent hot dog sausage bursting from our famous stuffed crust.”

Rather bizarrely and they may well be missing a trick, the company claims they have no plans to take the new Pizza Dog across to US shores.

Pizza Hut were successful with their original idea of stuffed crusts and have since added many variants including cheese and garlic bread stuffed crusts however it’s not a totally new invention as the Pizza Dog has been on the market in Thailand and Japan since 2007.  Only time will tell if the Dizza Dog will be a hit over here though it’s not exactly the greatest idea to help with our ever increasingly overweight and unhealthy nation is it?

Will you be trying the Pizza Dog?

Your bag for life can make you ill

You may be doing the right thing for the environment but by using a bag for life, it also makes you prone to being ill.

A study by the University of Arizona studied 84 reusable bags and revealed that over half were contaminated with harmful bacteria.

12% contained E.coli while 97% of the shoppers revealed that they do not wash or disinfect their bags.

Contamination occurs when juices from items such as raw meat leak into the fabric of the bags or plastic.

The advice given is to use one particular bag for raw meats while you should also wash bags and change them every 6 months.

While we’re at it, reusing water bottles also gives you the same concern. Make sure you don’t reuse the same bottle for longer than a week.

She’s been keeping her head down after being pictured smoking while seven months pregnant and being stripped of her Celebrity Mum of the Year title but now Stacey Solomon has opened up about her struggle beat her cigarette addiction while admitting she “knows it’s not ok.”

The 22 year old former X Factor contestant spoke to the Loose Women team and said that while she wasn’t trying to defend her actions, she felt the criticism she received had been a “little harsh.”

She said, “All of the responses are something that I deserve. I don’t for one minute think I can sit here and say it is ok – so I can accept that kind of criticism and although it’s not nice to hear I know that its true the health risks and maybe that will give me more power to stop it and nip it in the bud. There’s ups and downs to people being critical because it makes you think oh my God, I really must sort this out and you feel even more guilty than you already do because don’t get me wrong I felt guilty before all of this came out.  But there is a little a bit of you that thinks I love my children with all my heart so some of the comments are a little bit harsh.”

Her second child is due in May and she added, “It’s absolutely devastating not just because I saw the pictures in the paper – its something I’m not proud of and I’m really, really struggling with in general.  It’s not just because everyone knows now. Its something that I don’t want to do and that I’m not happy doing so it’s horrible.”

Foxy Bingo added that they axed her as their Celebrity Mum of the Year as, “Following stories in the newspapers in recent days, Foxy Bingo has taken the decision to stand Stacey down from her position as judge on Foxy Mum and from the voting shortlist for Foxy Bingo Celebrity Mum of the Year 2012, the winner of which will be announced next week. Stacey has apologised to the people at Foxy Bingo and is sorry and embarrassed by her actions. We understand Stacey is doing everything she can to stop smoking and in recent times has cut back dramatically. She’s naturally disappointed but accepts Foxy Bingo’s decision.”

Singer Meatloaf has sparked new health fears after he was taken ill just seconds after being seen live on air on Loose Women.

He was due to appear on the show to be interviewed and was seen messing around in the green room but minutes before he was due to go out on stage he became unwell and dropped out of the show.

Host Andrea McLean told viewers, “A little bit of sad news – I’m afraid Meat Loaf has taken unwell so he’s unable to join us for the end of the show.  Meat Loaf, I hope you feel better soon.”

No details of his condition were given however his fans will be concerned as he has suffered bouts of illness with the most recent being in July last year when he passed out during two concerts.  He later blamed both incidents on a lack of oxygen aggravating his asthma.  He told fans at the time, “I f***** fainted. I have asthma… I can’t breathe.”

He appeared on BBC’s The One Show on Monday saying, “My brain’s a little mush.”

Today is Happy Monday so smile!

Category: Health · 0

Does today feel any different from your usual Monday?

Did you still have to get up early to work?  Still have to take the kids to school?  Still have to go to school?

Well cheer up, because apparently today is Happy Monday.

Ah the reason, for a lot of people it’s pay day today and it’s been hailed by psychologists ‘Happy Monday’.

Dr David Holmes, a senior psychologist at Manchester Metropolitan University, says, “We all go in to work on that Monday, January 30, with renewed vigour. We are buoyed by the excitement of having money in the bank again and having one of the major family events of the year – the annual summer holiday – to look forward to.  This is a day when we feel particularly happy.  The financial excesses of Christmas means that January is a particularly difficult and long month for most of us cash-wise, and the first salary payday of the year hugely reduces the stress of that long wait to reinvigorate our finances.”

Dr Holmes went on to predict that there will be a further 11 happy days in total this year: the two May bank holidays, the day the clocks go forward in March and Midsummer’s Day in June.

We will apparently also be lifted in June because, “we will also feel buoyed by the celebrations and extra day off to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.  This gives us an extra day off and a long weekend so, whether we’re fans of the Royal Family or not, it is a real reason to be cheerful.”

Where not to eat lunch unless you want a 2000 calorie meal

Category: Health · 0

How many times have we heard the phrase, “You are what you eat”?

Not J D Wetherspoons apparently who are serving up a blood pressure soaring, heart attack on a plate meal amounting to a calorific 2000 calories.

The chain serves up a mixed grill which has won the accolade of the unhealthiest dish in the country.  Consisting of gammon, rump and pork steaks, lamb chops, chips, a fried egg, six beer-battered onion rings and two pork sausages, Wetherspoons serves around 12,000 of these meals a week at a price of £10.49.

With a total of almost 2000 calories, it would provide nearly all of a woman’s recommended maximum intake on a  single plate.  It also contains 42g of saturated fat (more than double the maximum recommended for an adult in a day) and an over the limit amount of salt at 6.2g.

The findings are taken from book Eat This, Not That!, which is published by Hearst-Rodale and acts to name and shame unhealthy restaurants and cafes in the UK.

They also look at Pret A Manger, Costa, Café Rouge, Strada and Prezzo, and also point out the healthier alternatives on their menus.
